AVELA
AVELA – A Vision for Engineering Literacy & Access (AVELA) champions an inclusive environment for STEM education and empowers a myriad of diverse communities through STEM innovation.
WHAT WE DO
AVELA closes the opportunity gap in STEM by pairing university student volunteers directly with underserved K–12 students. Our members design and lead hands-on workshops, camps, and panels that give younger students real exposure to engineering, technology, and research, often for the first time. Because our volunteers come from many of the same communities and backgrounds as the students they teach, AVELA is fundamentally about students helping students where mentors who’ve recently navigated the same barriers, share not just technical skills but a roadmap for getting into and succeeding in STEM.
We partner with local schools, community organizations, and industry professionals to turn that mentorship into tangible next steps, internships, research opportunities, and college pathways, so equitable access isn’t just a promise, it’s a program.
OUR VALUES
Ubuntu
We believe individual success is inseparable from community success, and we build programs that lift up the whole community, not just the individuals in the room.
Community
We create spaces where students, mentors, and partner organizations support one another, building lasting relationships that outlast any single workshop or semester.
Integrity
We hold ourselves accountable to the communities we serve, following through on our commitments and being transparent about our impact and our limitations.
“The work of organizations like AVELA is very important to improve access and develop skills in technology because it gives students of color an opportunity to contribute.”
